How to Select the Right Label Size for Your Barcode Printer — Sri Lanka Guide

A practical guide to choosing the right label roll size for your barcode printer in Sri Lanka. Standard sizes, use cases, and which to order for your business.

One of the most common questions we get from new customers: “What size labels do I order for my printer?” This guide gives you the answer for every common Sri Lankan use case.

Why Label Size Matters

Order the wrong size and your labels won’t feed through the printer correctly — causing jams, wasted media, and frustration. Most barcode printers auto-calibrate to detect the label gap, but only within their supported width range.

Two dimensions to know:

  • Width — how wide the label is (must be within your printer’s range)
  • Length (height) — how tall the label is (most printers support any length within reason)

Standard Label Sizes Used in Sri Lanka

30 × 20 mm — Small Product Tags

The most common size for pharmacies, jewellers, and small product labels. Fits a barcode, product name, and price on a tiny label.

Used by: Pharmacies, jewellers, small retail.

Compatible printers: Any printer with 20mm+ width (all Niimbot, XPrinter, Rongta models).

40 × 20 mm — Standard Retail Price Tag

The most popular label size in Sri Lankan retail. Fits a barcode, product code, name, and price clearly. Widely available in bulk packs.

Used by: Supermarkets, general retail, hardware stores, electronics shops.

Compatible printers: All models (XP-365B, XP-360B, Rongta RP400H, TSC TE200, Zebra ZD230).

40 × 30 mm — Medium Retail Label

A bit taller, which gives you room for more product information — useful if your product names are long.

Used by: Pharmaceutical products with dosage info, garments with size/colour details.

50 × 30 mm — Product Info Label

Wider and taller — good for labels with multiple lines of text, or for products that need both a barcode and extra details like expiry date or lot number.

Used by: Food manufacturers, pharmacies, importers.

58 × 40 mm — Shelf Edge Label

A common size for shelf-edge price labels in supermarkets and hardware stores.

Used by: Supermarkets, wholesale shops, hardware stores.

100 × 50 mm — Larger Product Label

For products that need a prominent barcode, large text, and extra information. Common in wholesale and warehouse environments.

Used by: Warehouses, importers, electronics retailers.

100 × 150 mm (4 × 6 inch) — Shipping Label

The standard size for shipping labels used by Sri Lankan courier services including Presto, Kapruka, and international couriers like DHL and FedEx. Requires a 4-inch printer (XPrinter XP-420B or similar).

Used by: E-commerce sellers, warehouses, importers/exporters.

How to Know If a Label Roll Fits Your Printer

Check your printer’s maximum label width in the specifications:

PrinterMax Label Width
Niimbot B150 mm
Niimbot B3S75 mm
XPrinter XP-365B80 mm
XPrinter XP-360B82 mm
TSC TE200112 mm
XPrinter XP-420B115 mm
Rongta RP400H108 mm
Zebra ZD230114 mm

Your label width must be equal to or less than the printer’s maximum. The label length can be almost anything.

Direct Thermal vs Thermal Transfer Labels

Make sure you order the right type of media:

  • Direct thermal labels — used in direct-thermal-only printers (Niimbot B1, B3S, XP-365B, XP-360B, XP-420B). These labels turn black when heated. No ribbon needed.
  • Thermal transfer labels — used with thermal transfer printers (Rongta RP400H, TSC TE200, Zebra ZD230). These labels require a ribbon to print. They are more durable.

Ordering thermal transfer labels for a direct thermal printer (or vice versa) will result in blank output.
