What Is a Thermal Receipt Printer?
A thermal receipt printer uses heat to print on special heat-sensitive paper. There’s no ink, no toner, and no ribbon. The printhead heats up, turns the paper black, and produces the receipt. This is why thermal printers are cheap to run — the only consumable is the paper roll.
All modern POS receipt printers in Sri Lanka are thermal. If someone is selling you an inkjet or laser receipt printer, walk away.
The 5 Things That Actually Matter
1. Print Speed
Print speed is measured in millimetres per second (mm/s). For a receipt that’s about 15cm long:

2. Paper Width: 80mm vs 57mm
Most POS receipt printers in Sri Lanka use 80mm paper — this is the standard for A4-style receipts with logos, item lists, and totals. Avoid 57mm printers for POS billing; they’re more suited to small ticketing machines.
Recommendation: Always choose 80mm unless you have a specific reason for 57mm.
3. Connectivity
This is where most buyers make mistakes. Receipt printers come with different interface options:

An auto-cutter cuts the receipt paper automatically after each print. Without it, the cashier needs to manually tear the paper — which is slow and leaves messy edges.

If you use a cash drawer, check that the printer has a cash drawer port (RJ11 or RJ12). The cash drawer connects to the printer and opens automatically when a sale is completed.
