Best Receipt Printer Sri Lanka 2026 | Thermal Printer Buying Guide

Best receipt printers in Sri Lanka for POS systems — compare Epson TM-T82X, XPrinter XP-N160II & XP-Q200. Thermal receipt printer buying guide with prices, specs & recommendations.

Choosing a receipt printer seems simple — until you’re staring at a dozen models with different specs and have no idea what half of them mean. This guide cuts through the jargon and tells you exactly what matters for a Sri Lankan business.

What Is a Thermal Receipt Printer?

A thermal receipt printer uses heat to print on special heat-sensitive paper. There’s no ink, no toner, and no ribbon. The printhead heats up, turns the paper black, and produces the receipt. This is why thermal printers are cheap to run — the only consumable is the paper roll.

All modern POS receipt printers in Sri Lanka are thermal. If someone is selling you an inkjet or laser receipt printer, walk away.

The 5 Things That Actually Matter

1. Print Speed

Print speed is measured in millimetres per second (mm/s). For a receipt that’s about 15cm long:

SpeedTime per receiptVerdict
100 mm/s~1.5 secondsSlow — avoid for busy counters
160 mm/s~0.9 secondsGood for small shops
200 mm/s~0.75 secondsFast — suitable for any business
250 mm/s~0.6 secondsOverkill for most Sri Lankan shops

Recommendation: Choose 160 mm/s or above. The XPrinter XP-Q200 and Epson TM-T82X both print at 200 mm/s.

2. Paper Width: 80mm vs 57mm

Most POS receipt printers in Sri Lanka use 80mm paper — this is the standard for A4-style receipts with logos, item lists, and totals. Avoid 57mm printers for POS billing; they’re more suited to small ticketing machines.

Recommendation: Always choose 80mm unless you have a specific reason for 57mm.

3. Connectivity

This is where most buyers make mistakes. Receipt printers come with different interface options:

InterfaceWhat it meansBest for
USBDirect cable to one PCSingle-counter shops
Serial (RS-232)Older POS setupsLegacy systems
LAN (Ethernet)Connects to your networkMultiple terminals
BluetoothWireless from phone/tabletMobile POS, small shops

Recommendation: For a single counter, USB is fine. For multiple cashiers or network printing, get a printer with LAN. The Epson TM-T82X has USB + Serial + LAN — all three.

4. Auto-Cutter

An auto-cutter cuts the receipt paper automatically after each print. Without it, the cashier needs to manually tear the paper — which is slow and leaves messy edges.

Recommendation: Only buy a printer with an auto-cutter. Every printer we sell at Invenova has one.

5. Cash Drawer Port

If you use a cash drawer, check that the printer has a cash drawer port (RJ11 or RJ12). The cash drawer connects to the printer and opens automatically when a sale is completed.

The Epson TM-T82X and XPrinter XP-N160II both have cash drawer ports.

Do You Need a Receipt Printer AND a Barcode Printer?

Yes — most retail businesses in Sri Lanka need both:

  • Receipt printer → prints the customer bill at checkout
  • Barcode label printer → prints barcode stickers on products and shelves

They’re different devices with different paper. See our Receipt Printer vs Barcode Printer guide for a full comparison.
