Barcode Printer vs Label Printer: What's the Difference?

Confused about barcode printers and label printers? Learn the key differences, when to use each, and which one your Sri Lankan business actually needs.

The Short Answer

A barcode printer and a label printer are often the same device. The difference is in how they’re used, not in the hardware itself.

  • A label printer prints any kind of label — product names, prices, addresses, shelf tags, or barcodes.
  • A barcode printer is a label printer that’s specifically used (or optimized) for printing barcodes — the scannable lines or squares on product packaging.

Most thermal label printers sold in Sri Lanka today can do both. When someone says “barcode printer,” they usually mean a thermal label printer that prints barcode labels.

Types of Printers Used in Sri Lankan Retail

Thermal Transfer Printers

These use a heated ribbon to print onto labels. The print is durable and resistant to heat, moisture, and chemicals.

  • Best for: Long-lasting labels, outdoor products, chemical containers
  • Cost: Higher (ribbon + labels)
  • Common brands in SL: Zebra, TSC

Direct Thermal Printers

These print by heating the label itself — no ribbon needed. Simpler and cheaper to operate.

  • Best for: Price tags, shelf labels, shipping labels (anything that doesn’t need to last years)
  • Cost: Lower (labels only)
  • Common brands in SL: Xprinter, Rongta, Niimbot

For most Sri Lankan retail shops, direct thermal printers are the right choice. Price tags and barcode labels don’t need to survive years of exposure — they just need to be clear and scannable at the checkout counter.

What About Inkjet and Laser Printers?

You can print barcode labels on a regular inkjet or laser printer using A4 label sheets. But this has significant drawbacks:

  • Slower: Printing individual labels takes much longer
  • Wasteful: A4 sheets often have unused labels
  • Less sharp: Inkjet barcodes can smudge; laser toner doesn’t bond well to glossy label stock
  • No roll support: You can’t print continuous rolls of labels

If you’re printing more than 20 labels per day, a dedicated thermal printer saves time and money.
